The Seimas takes up a proposal on voluntary financing of national defense

The changes provide for a monthly or one-time payment – an application for support should be submitted to the State Tax Inspectorate specifying the amount.

On Thursday, following submission, the Seimas accepted for consideration the following amendments to the Law on Charity and Support: 69 Seimas members voted for it, and 11 abstained.

“The sums can be much higher than when donating personal income tax,” said “libertarian” Vytautas Mitalas.

He also emphasized that from 2025, residents will no longer be able to support the state sector from the income tax they pay.

V. Mitala, among other things, said that companies should not expect benefits, such as corporate tax, when supporting national defense.

At that time, social democrat Algirdas Sys said that the current procedure does not prohibit either residents or companies from donating to defense.

In 2022, Lithuanian residents, allocating 1.2 percent of the income tax they paid, donated 28.724 million euros. Of this amount, the army received 112.9 thousand. euros.

Defense funding currently stands at 2.75 percent. GDP, however, the obligation for banks to pay the solidarity contribution will expire next year. The usual budgetary defense financing amounts to 2.52 percent. GDP.
