The Seimas allowed bailiffs to become politicians

On Tuesday, the Seimas adopted the following amendments to the Law on Bailiffs: 114 voted for, none once morest, and seven MPs abstained.

Conservative Vilius Semeška said that providing bailiffs with the opportunity to become self-government politicians in the regions will disrupt their services.

“People cannot choose bailiffs in the regions, they are simply assigned and imagine, the bailiff becomes a politician, and as long as he is a politician, his office is run by his representative. I would not think that this is completely good,” he said at the Seimas meeting.

“I dare to doubt whether we should really accept that the bailiff is a politician, although he temporarily suspends his activities as a bailiff, but his office is run by his representative and still has some influence in the region, whether this would ensure trust in the institute of bailiffs,” he added. .

The Seimas also prohibited bailiffs and their assistants from being owners of companies whose activities are related to debt collection, asset storage and valuation, legal and mediation services, and changed the procedure for the bailiff’s qualification exam – it determined that its results will be valid for five years.

If a bailiff takes office within five years following passing the exam, the validity period of the results is extended until he holds this office. In some cases, bailiffs will be exempt from the exam.

The number of bailiffs in their areas of operation will be determined based on the population and their median income for the past three years. Every year by October 1, the Ministry of Justice will assess the need to change the number of bailiffs and their areas of activity.

The Seimas determined that a bailiff who wants to participate in a competition to hold office in another territory must have worked in the same territory for at least five years.
