The Security Council condemns the annexation decision.. Russia lifts its veto

After the UN Security Council began its deliberations on a draft resolution condemning Russia’s annexation of four Ukrainian regionsMoscow blocked his recognition of the use of the veto.

In detail, the draft resolution prepared by the United States and Albania called on all countries and other organizations not to recognize the annexation, and considered it false.

Russia: You do not want peace, and America: a great danger

Moscow responded by vetoing the resolution, as its delegate to the council, Vasily Nebenzia, saw that the West did not want peace in Ukraine.

He believed that everyone should respect the right of the peoples of eastern Ukraine to self-determination, as she put it.

He added that the world had never before seen a Security Council resolution condemning one of its members.

On the other hand, Washington’s delegate to the United Nations, Linda Thomas Greenfield, considered that the Russian annexation of Ukrainian regions is very dangerous.

She added that the Russian decision deserves collective condemnation.

She also stressed that Russian President Vladimir Putin had miscalculated regarding his war in Ukraine.

And she considered that Moscow fabricated the results of the referendums to annex the Ukrainian regions, pointing out that this step is a violation of international security.

The decision to annex is final

These developments came following Russian President Vladimir Putin announced on Friday morning the official annexation of 4 Ukrainian regions to his country, namely Donetsk and Luhansk, in addition to Zaporizhia and Kherson, stressing that this decision was finally settled.

The master of the Kremlin also promised to rebuild those cities, so that their residents would feel peace and safety. He emphasized that the residents of those areas had become Russian citizens.

At the same time, he declared his readiness to stop the fighting and negotiate with Kyiv.

After the Russian president’s lengthy speech, the leaders of the four regions (loyal to Moscow) signed the annexation decrees, bringing more than 15% of the territory of Ukraine into the Russian territory.

The regions of Lugansk and Donetsk, wracked by fighting since separatists there declared independence in 2014, make up the broader Donbass region in eastern Ukraine.

While Russia took control of all of Kherson and parts of Zaporizhia, two other regions that were officially annexed in addition to Lugansk and Donetsk to Russia in a ceremony held in the Kremlin, which sparked international outrage and complete Western rejection.
