The Security Council condemns “all acts” of migrant smuggling and human trafficking

The UN Security Council on Thursday condemned all acts “of migrant smuggling and human trafficking” having Libyan territory and off the coast of Libya as a destination« .

In a unanimously adopted resolution, the UN executive body has given authority, for a further period of one year, to the member states concerned to inspect vessels sailing on the high seas off the coast of Libya, ” if they have reasonable grounds to suspect that they are being used for migrant smuggling or human trafficking from Libya« .

According to the resolution, the Member States concerned are those which are “ engaged in the fight against migrant smuggling and human trafficking, acting individually or within the framework of regional bodies”.

They are authorized to use any means”dictated by the specific circumstances” to fight against traffickers of migrants and human beings, “in strict compliance with international law and human rights”, indicated the Fifteen members of the Security Council.
