The Secrets of the Mogwai, an animated series prequel to Gizmo

HBO Max’s animated series Gremlins: The Secrets of the Mogwai will serve as a prequel to the 1984 film Gremlins and its 1990 sequel Gremlins 2: The New Batch.

Taking place in 1920s Shanghai, eastern China, Gremlins : Secrets of the Mogwai tells the story of the meeting between 10-year-old Sam Wing and Gizmo, a young Mogwai. Along with a teenage street thief named Elle, Sam and Gizmo embark on a perilous journey through the Chinese countryside, encountering, and sometimes battling, monsters and colorful spirits from Chinese folklore. In their quest to return Gizmo to his family and uncover a legendary treasure, they are pursued by a power-hungry industrialist and his growing army of evil Gremlins.

Two seasons for Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai

Scheduled on HBO Max and Cartoon Network (ACME Night Block), the series animated Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai is produced by Amblin Television, in association with Warner Bros Animation, and will consist of two seasons with ten episodes. The first episode will have its world premiere at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival on June 13. Darryl Frank, Justin Falvey, Sam Register (Animaniacs) as well as Tze Chun (TKO Studios) and Brendan Hay (Robot Chicken) are executive producers. Dan Krall (Coraline) is supervising producer. Note that the voice cast includes comedians Izaac Wang, Ming-Na Wen, BD Wong, James Hong, AJ LoCascio, Gabrielle Nevaeh Green and Matthew Rhys.
