According to the press release of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government, Xie Zhanhuan, Secretary for the Environment and Ecology of Hong Kong, departed for Seattle, the United States on August 14 to attend the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Energy Ministers’ Meeting.
Xie Zhanhuan will attend the APEC Energy Ministers Meeting on August 15th and 16th (US time, the same below). The theme of the meeting is “Creating a Resilient and Sustainable Future for All”. During the two-day meeting, energy ministers and senior officials from the 21 APEC member economies will discuss how to strengthen cooperation to accelerate the clean energy transition while ensuring sustainable and inclusive economic development in the region. Discussions will also include decarbonization of the energy sector, strengthening energy resilience and security in the region, and setting new energy targets for APEC members.
In a discussion session on carbon reduction in the energy industry to be held on August 15, Tse Chin-wan will share with other APEC economies Hong Kong’s strategies and efforts in carbon reduction in the energy industry, including the development of new energy facilities, such as offshore liquefied natural gas receiving terminals; the establishment of The goal is to stop using coal for daily power generation by 2035; accelerate the development of renewable energy; explore cooperation with neighboring regions to increase the use of zero-carbon energy.
During his stay in the United States, Xie Zhanhuan will hold bilateral talks with representatives of other APEC economies to exchange views on strengthening cooperation on energy issues. In addition, Xie Zhanhuan will also visit new energy facilities, including the geothermal center of Microsoft Corporation.
Deputy Director of the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department, Poon Kwok-ying, will also attend the meeting.
Xie Zhanhuan will return to Hong Kong on the morning of August 17th. During his absence, the Deputy Secretary for the Environment and Ecology, Wong Suk-han, will act as the Secretary for the Environment and Ecology.
