Researchers who have been studying the naked mole rat for decades, a physically rather ugly yet exceptional animal, have managed to transfer a gene responsible for its incredible longevity to mice.
Martin Carli discusses Friday with Patrick Lagacé, of this animal which lives approximately 41 years, which is ten times longer than all the other rodents.
“So this animal produces hyaluronic acid in very large quantities and this would be the key to its longevity, its resistance to disease. So the researchers isolated the gene and gave mice the naked mole-rat version of the same gene and they found that the mice were healthier: they had no more diseases. We tried to induce tumors in their skin artificially and these tumors did not develop.
