The second phase of the Lebanese expatriate voting in the parliamentary elections begins abroad, and Lebanese President Michel Aoun visits the headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to see the progress of the electoral process.

The second phase of the Lebanese expatriate voting in the parliamentary elections started today, Sunday, in 48 countries, with the participation of 194,348 Lebanese expatriates, according to the official Lebanese news agency.

Lebanese President Michel Aoun visited the headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to see the progress of the polling process abroad, congratulating the election supervisors on the accomplishment of their tasks. Aoun expressed his hope that the elections will pass in all its phases “without problems.”

In this context, the Lebanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated, in a statement, that “Australia is the first country in which expatriate voting began, on Saturday night,” noting that “the United States will be the last to open the ballot boxes in front of them, given the time difference.”

“We are in constant contact with embassies and consulates, and we want the elections to be conducted with integrity and transparency,” said Lebanese Foreign Minister Abdullah Bou Habib from the operations room, explaining that the polls “will arrive in Beirut following the polls are closed.”

Bou Habib announced that “the voter turnout in the first phase of the elections was 59.45%,” adding: “There are 3 countries where the voter turnout is above 70%, namely Iran, Bahrain and Syria, in Iraq it is 48%, and in Egypt it is below 50%.” As for the rest of the countries, the voter turnout was above 60%.

The first round of voting for expatriates took placeLast Friday, in 10 countries: Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Iran, Qatar, Jordan, Oman, Kuwait, Iraq, Bahrain and Syria.

The elections will be held in the country on 15 May. 103 electoral lists comprising 718 candidates distributed over 15 electoral districts are competing in the elections to select 128 deputies in Parliament.
