The second Security Council resolution condemning the annexation of the Russian territory… Exercising the Russian veto

A UN Security Council resolution condemning Russia’s annexation of occupied territories in Ukraine was rejected by Russian opposition on the 30th (local time).

The resolution, initiated by the United States and Albania, was put to a vote at the Security Council meeting held at the UN headquarters in New York on the same day, but was rejected following Russia, a party and permanent member, exercised its veto power as expected.

Ten countries voted in favor, and four countries abstained, including China.

The draft resolution is a referendum on the annexation of Russia held in four occupied territories in Ukraine from the 23rd to the 27th: the Eastern Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR), the Lugansk (Ukrainian name Luhansk) People’s Republic (LPR), the southern Zaporiza Oblast and Kherson Oblast. It was declared “illegal and ineffective”.

He urged all UN member states not to approve the referendum results and territorial changes in those areas.

Following the failure of a legally binding Security Council resolution, the US is expected to instead pursue a UN General Assembly resolution that cannot be vetoed.
