At 98, Janette Bertrand is on a mission to find role models for the elderly.
In an interview with TVA Nouvelles, the author and host came to talk regarding her association with the Fondation Institut de gériatrie de Montréal as part of the project “Seniors in need of role models”.
“The elderly, we do not know them. We don’t know who they are. And me, I’m tired of being told: ” you are my model. ” There are plenty of others, but the thing is that we don’t know them! ”, proclaims Ms. Bertrand .
“Why are young people so afraid of growing old? It’s because they say, ”we don’t want to be invisible anymore. We no longer want to be of any use. We want to exist.” However, people aged 70 and over, it seems that they no longer exist, ”she adds.
Seniors, says the host and writer, want to feel needed, even “indispensable.”
This is why she invites the population to testify to the inspiring seniors who surround them.
“I want young women to write to say: ‘my grandmother is extraordinary’,” says Janette Bertrand.
