The construction of the sculpture was initiated and implemented by the foundation established by the actor’s family.
The sculpture depicts an actor entering the theater. It stands under the former windows of D. Banionis’ make-up room, among the trees planted by the actors themselves following the theater building was built.
Behind the figure of the actor, a pedestal stretches like a path where the most famous films and performances of D. Banionis can be seen, according to the message sent by the head of the foundation, the actor’s granddaughter Inga Banionytė-Gedgaudiene.
“The inscriptions are not clear, something remains, something disappears from memory,” said the author of the sculpture, Klaudijs Pūdymas.
He said that he wanted to portray D. Banionis as a person, an actor who, lost in his thoughts, goes to work in the theater to create a role.
The sculpture was created with the support of companies and individuals.
The name of D. Banionis’s companion and supporter – his wife Onute – is also hidden in the sculpture.
“We wanted the sculpture to be simple, human, without pomp,” said the actor’s son, director Raimundas Banionis.
Actor and director D. Banionis (1924-2014) created more than 100 theater and over 50 film roles during his career. He was awarded the title of honorary citizen of the city of Panevėžys, for his services to Lithuanian culture he was awarded the Order of the Grand Duke of Lithuania Gediminas III degree, the Commander’s Cross, the Lithuanian National Culture and Art Prize, the Peace Prize and other awards.
