A study by Harvard University in the United States found that the “satiety” in the brain of obese people following eating may be slower than that of ordinary people, which means that they are more likely to overeat, and even following losing weight, the brain response of obese people has not recovered sharply , the results may reflect why people who were once obese tend to gain weight once more.

The first stage: Obese people are slow to feel full and prone to overeating
Harvard Medical School conducted a research survey on obesity earlier, the study was published in the journal “Nature Metabolism” (Nature Metabolism). In the first phase, the researchers invited 30 people who are medically defined as obese, that is, people with a BMI (Body Mass Index) greater than 30, and 30 people of standard weight to participate. In the experiment, the participants were fed through a feeding tube to eliminate the influence of taste on the brain. Half an hour later, the participants’ brain responses were monitored using computed tomography.
It was found that following people with a normal weight ingest food, the striatum (striatum) signal that drives the foraging instinct in the brain will gradually slow down, which means that the brain recognizes that the body has absorbed enough food to transmit dopamine (dopamine) of happy emotions On the contrary, following the obese people eat, the activity of the striatum of the brain is still active, and the dopamine index has no significant increase.
The second stage: brain damage is not repaired following weight loss, easy to regain weight
In the second phase of the experiment, the researchers asked 30 obese people to lose 10% of their body weight within 3 months, and then underwent the same test. It was found that the brain activity of obese people did not change following losing weight, which means that the feeling of fullness is also slow, and it is more difficult to obtain happiness through satiety. Mireille Serlie, a member of the research team and a professor of endocrinology at Yale University School of Medicine, pointed out that the findings reflect that the effects of obesity on the brain may not be easily reversed.
“The idea that weight loss failures are solely due to a lack of willpower may be biased or oversimplifies things.”
The team will further expand the research, mainly focusing on the time point of irreversible damage to the brain and the relationship between damage and food types.
