You’re on your way home. Suddenly all you can think regarding is that you have to go to the toilet incredibly urgently. Your focus shifts completely to the pressure in your bladder. Every step that brings you closer to your home toilet increases the urgency. But why is that so?
The phenomenon is called “latchkey urgency” or “home toilet syndrome”, which in German means “front door key urgency” and “home toilet syndrome”. Both describe the condition in which people feel a strong need to go to the toilet as soon as they approach their home.
“Brain sends signals to bladder”
«The closer you get to home, the more you will feel a sense of urgency. Your body says: Hey, we’re almost there, we’ve done it,” explains Jessica Stern, assistant professor of psychiatry, to Huffpost.
Dr. Victor W. Nitti, Professor of Urology and Gynecology, explains: “The brain sends signals to the bladder that tell it when it should contract and when not.” So your brain tells your bladder when you can pee. Mind and body are closely connected and work together. Numerous body functions are controlled, including urination.

Familiar surroundings ensure relaxation
The exact cause of this phenomenon is not fully understood. A study however, has compared the phenomenon to the classical conditioning founded by Pavlov. In this case, you’re essentially subconsciously teaching your brain that when you see the front door, it’s time to pee.
It is believed that “home toilet syndrome” is related to psychological factors. When a person is in a familiar environment such as their home, it can trigger a feeling of relaxation and security. This, in turn, can cause the bladder to relax and increase the need to go to the bathroom.
But the whole thing is not related to a medical illness or even urinary incontinence. Rather, it is a normal reaction of the body to the change in your environment.
