The Science Behind Maximum Happiness: Discover the Age When You’ll Be the Happiest

Ruhr University Bochum (Germany) has solved the riddle of the age at which people experience maximum happiness in their lives.

Despite the ability to achieve a state of well-being at various stages of life, one period in particular stands out above the rest when it comes to happiness. To unravel this mystery, the researchers analyzed subjective well-being in a data set spanning 443 samples from 460,902 participants.

The study’s co-lead author, Susanne Bücker, explained that they focused on “changes in three fundamental components of subjective well-being: life satisfaction, positive emotional states, and negative emotional states.”

The findings revealed that life satisfaction tends to decline for most people between the ages of 9 and 16, but then experiences gradual growth until around age 70.

After that point, satisfaction begins to decline once more, reaching its lowest point around age 96. Regarding positive emotional states, it was observed that they decrease from 9 years to 94 years. On the other hand, negative emotional states tend to increase between ages 9 and 22, decrease until around age 60, and then increase once more.

Bücker points out that hormonal changes and difficulties in social life are factors that contribute to the decrease in satisfaction between 9 and 16 years of age. The same occurs at the end of adulthood, when “physical performance declines, health often deteriorates and social contacts begin to reduce,” the researcher noted.
