“He doesn’t let us get close even by chance” acknowledges Sebastián López, director of the Environmental Police Inspectors Area. It looks like a police chronicle, as if they were looking for a criminal but it’s just a red deer in rut that turned up in a place that’s dangerous. Both for the animal and for the consequences that an accident can cause in the Ambrosio Taravella International Airport area.
A deer at the Córdoba Airport: there will be an operation to capture it
The animal was seen inside the station premises. Personnel from the Environmental Police, the Airport Security Police, the National Civil Aviation Administration and Tatú Carreta carried out a search of the area this morning and organized an operation to capture the animal. From the initial 800 to 1,000 meters, it has now been fenced off in a few hectares, far from any danger.
But love is stronger
For those responsible for the Environmental Police “this type of operation can take several days to achieve the capture.”
The tactic is simple, apparently, it is closing in on it, reducing the space where it moves, trying to prevent the animal from noticing. It is done in two ways, “the first is to put salts (so that it does not dehydrate) and food. We have also taken out dogs and other animals that might scare him,” says López. But the key is much more interesting: love.
According to the researchers, the lost European red deer is an animal in heat, it is between 3 and 5 years old and is in the mating season.
“As we assume that it is in heat, we look for scents of a red doe and we have distributed it in strategic places to reduce the space it has to move in,” says Sebastián López.
But beware, what can be interpreted as perfume or fragrances for humans, in this caseanimal aromas are “extracted from feces and urine”.
“We have spread the smell of red deer so that it does not move so much. They have a highly developed sense of smell. It is fenced and we are calmer. We have identified it in the paradise area,” says the head of the operation.
The capture
Due to security protocol, its capture must be carried out with caution to preserve the integrity of the animal and the acting personnel, since this species – when it feels cornered – can become aggressive.
Once rescued, the cervid will be transferred to the Tatú Carreta rehabilitation center to evaluate its health status and remain in the reserve, since it cannot be released because it is exotic.
Inspectors from the Environmental Police, belonging to the Ministry of Coordination, the Airport Security Police, the National Civil Aviation Administration and veterinarians from Tatú Carreta will participate in the capture operation.
Environmental Police reminds residents that if they see an injured specimen of wildlife, they can contact the landline 0351-4420924, or by WhatsApp at 351-3108709 to assist it.
