A look back at the scandal that we mentioned yesterday: that of the 30,000 babies torn from their mothers and sold by nuns until the 1980s. We were able to collect the testimonies of two of these babies at the time, two women: One is Walloon, the other Flemish. They are now looking for their biological mothers.

Anne-Chantal was adopted under X in 1963 and she welcomes us to her arena, where she organizes activities for children. “Like all adopted children, we have this kind of acute ‘abandonment’, we have this need to help those who need it.“, she says.

Her parents had been married for 7 years when they turned to adoption. “They went to look for me in France and they came back with a little baby under their arm“, she explains, flatly.

Anne-Chantal grows up in a loving family, but suffering persists. “These are wounds that remain. Now being the mother of three children, to think that I can live without knowing what happens to my child is unimaginable.“.

A difficult path

Lieve was also adopted, and has now been looking for her biological mother for around ten years. In a letter, she was able to have contact with her. “You seem like a loving person, who was raised with a lot of love, in a warm home. Now you would like to meet me, but I don’t want to, I can’t provide for you.” , writes Lieve’s biological mother.

Her biological mother is traumatized by the circumstances of the birth. “They put her to sleep and when she woke up they showed her a dead baby“, she explains. “They told him it was better that way, that the baby was dead“.

Despite his mother’s reluctance, Lieve remains hopeful of meeting her one day.
