The SBB Dining Experience: Are Passengers Being Ripped Off? An Inside Look

2023-06-16 13:57:00

Does the SBB rip off hungry passengers? Yes, according to Nau.ch reader Igor P.*. A few days ago he was on the train from Interlaken Ost to Bern. His stomach is growling, so he and his companion choose the dining car. “In contrast to the rest of the train, there was plenty of space here,” says Igor.

His girlfriend chooses a red Thai curry and he chooses a portion of cappellacci pasta. “I was particularly taken with the picture on the menu card,” says the reader. The caption reads “A touch of Italy”. For the price of CHF 23.50 he expects a decent meal.

When the plate came, the shock: «There were only nine cappellacci on it. I wondered what that was regarding!” But the train passenger is hungry and eats.

“The pasta wasn’t even particularly tasty, it was rather bland,” says Igor. When the serving gastro employee asked if everything was right, the still hungry Igor said: “That was pretty little!”

To the surprise of the Nau.ch reader, the employee even agrees and nods: “I’ve noticed that too, I see it the same way. Be sure to report this to the SBB!” After all, nothing else ever changes.

Igor explains: «It doesn’t seem to be a general problem. My girlfriend was quite satisfied with her dish». But the fact that he himself had to shell out a whopping 2.60 francs per piece of pasta annoys Igor. “I think it’s way too expensive.”

Nau.ch asks the SBB. How can the high price be justified? And are the dishes freshly prepared or simply warmed up? In the answer, the railway company hardly responds to the questions.

All that is said is that the emphasis is on «seasonal and regional dishes». The complex goods logistics for “Switzerland’s fastest restaurants” also play a role in the price.

You only get a few feedback on the prices. The SBB does not go into what kind. But she refers to a positive test of the “Gault Millau”. So much can be revealed: the tester does not eat cappellacci here.
