Zermatt and Beaver Creek were not worth a trip for the alpine ski men; one cancellation followed another this season following the opening giant slalom in Sölden and the slalom last Sunday in Val d’Isere also fell through. Now it’s finally time to really get started: Val Gardena, the first classic of the season, is just around the corner. Three races are planned on the Saslong from Thursday to Saturday, as a Matterhorn downhill run will be held in Val Gardena, with a Super-G in between and then another downhill run.
But that’s not all: on Sunday the entourage will move to Alta Badia, where two giant slalom races will take place on the legendary Gran Risa. “It’s a pretty sporty program, but we’re now happy regarding every race that can take place,” says ÖSV Alpine boss Herbert Mandl.
The first downhill training is scheduled to take place today; the weather forecast for Wednesday’s practice session is still uncertain. Vincent Kriechmayr from Mühlviertel has good memories of South Tyrol, as he won the classic last year, on a shortened route, for the first time in his career. Daniel Hemetsberger from Nußdorf was also on course for victory for a long time before he risked too much when leaving the infamous Ciaslat: “I asked myself whether I wanted to win – and I went all in. It was too much.”
