The Wolfgangsee not only owes its name to St. Wolfgang, but also a spectacular lake stage in the future. On the occasion of the 1,100th birthday of the Bishop of Regensburg, the three riverside communities of St. Gilgen, St. Wolfgang and Strobl commissioned a musical – and associated with the construction of a lakeside stage on the banks of St. Gilgen.

The stage can be dismantled and is mobile

Technical peculiarity of the stage: It consists of dismantled modules and will be erected in front of the holiday center in the Ried district of St. Gilgen for the annual performance season (May and June) so that “Wolf – The Mystical” can be performed there. “But it can also be built in other places,” says architect Eduard Neversal, the planner, who therefore speaks of a “Salzkammergut lake stage”. In winter, the stage is packed in containers and stored in the construction yards of the Wolfgangsee communities.

Both the 23 meter wide stage and the auditorium with 800 seats are covered. This is something that the lake stages in Bregenz and Mörbisch cannot do.

A Wolfgangsee Betriebs-GmbH was founded for the project, backed by the three communities. The company is investing 2.65 million euros for the project. The lake stage costs 1.71 million euros and the musical costs 940,000 euros.

Only part of the money comes from the communities. The two federal states of Upper Austria and Salzburg are also contributing 500,000 euros each. There will also be sponsorship money – and, above all, income from ticket sales. Those responsible expect around 10,000 visitors per season.
“The money is well invested here,” says Tourism Regional Councilor Markus Achleitner (ÖVP). “The lake stage and the musical will be a tourist beacon for the Salzkammergut. The covered stage promotes year-round tourism.”

The musical “Wolf” will premiere on May 23rd and will then be shown every year in May and June. “This gives the Salzkammergut its ‘Everyman’,” says Helga Rabl-Stadler, the legendary former president of the Salzburg Festival.
