There will be a few catalogs in the new travel agency ins Leben on Salzburger Strasse. However, no travel offers will be found there – but rather a wide variety of projects and initiatives, organized by the Evangelische Pfarrgemeinde AB Linz-Süd. With the “travel agency into life”, the parish of the Johanneskirche, headed by Pastor Jörg Schagerl, wants to promote togetherness in the densely built-up and heavily trafficked part of the city and improve the quality of life. To do this, new paths are being taken.
“Many do not expect anything innovative from the church as an institution, it is often difficult to approach people,” says Schagerl in an OÖN interview. With the travel agency (the idea for this was born around two years ago) a meeting platform is to be created where people can easily obtain information. “We have a lot on offer that people wouldn’t suspect that we have,” says Schagerl, citing the church’s tutoring project as an example. For a small fee, children with a migration background would be supported in their learning.
Diversity is very important in the travel agency: the option of attending the funeral service or becoming part of the choir is “advertised” just as much as the format where participants can have the fertility of their garden soil examined.
invitation to all
The colorful program is made possible by the commitment and the different skills of the members of the parish, around 70 of them are part of the project team. Visitors to the travel agency should also be colorful and diverse, and the project should be “a warm invitation” to everyone, regardless of their denomination. “We don’t want to push someone to do anything in the background or be missionary, but to competently accompany people on their life journey and in different life situations,” says Schagerl.
On Saturday, September 9th, the opening will be celebrated in Salzburger Strasse. With its yellow and white appearance, the travel agency, whose facade was previously adorned with a large mural, is intended to be a new eye-catcher. It is open Monday to Friday from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. On the one hand, those who are interested can get an idea of the offers directly on site, on the other hand they can also do this via the homepage and app. An old VW bus is also part of the project, which stops at various locations in Linz and is intended to draw attention to the initiatives.
For Schagerl, the idea of the “travel agency into life” – for example, the parish garden as a green oasis should be a central meeting place away from the concrete desert in front of the front door – also fits well with the political considerations that are being rolled out for the district. As reported, politicians have taken a look at Salzburger Strasse, on which around 36,000 cars are counted every day, and, using a cooperative planning process, have collected ideas on how the area might be made more attractive as a place to live and relax.
There is still a lot to do before the official start, Schagerl and his team are curious to see how many people actually accept the invitation. His advice to anyone potentially interested: “Just drop by or click through online.”
