In a press release published today, the Autonomous Union of Higher Education (SAES) reacted strongly to the tragic events that occurred this Friday, February 9, 2024 at the Gaston Berger University of Saint-Louis (UGB).
The death of student Alpha Yoro Tounkara, a consequence of violent police repression, aroused deep indignation within the university community. The National Office (BN) of the SAES took a firm decision by decreeing a “48-hour strike slogan, on Monday February 12 and Tuesday February 13, 2024”, in order to denounce these acts and demand that justice be returned. In the press release, the union also recalls the importance of campus general assemblies (AG), urging coordinators to convene them and send the minutes before February 16, 2024.

These tragic events once once more highlight the ongoing tensions between authorities and students, as well as the urgent demands for security and respect for fundamental rights on university campuses. In response to this statement from the SAES, the authorities are expected to take rapid and effective measures to calm the situation and guarantee the safety of students and university staff.
