A Russian ice hockey player suspected of spying for Russia has been arrested in Poland, where he was playing, Warsaw announced on Friday. “The man who is detained is a professional sportsman from a first division hockey club,” added the government. The suspect has resided in Poland since 2021.
“On the territory of Poland, he carried out foreign intelligence tasks, in particular the identification of sensitive infrastructures in several voivodeships (administrative districts, editor’s note)”, adds the government press release.
The Russian national was arrested on June 11, in the Silesian Voivodeship in southern Poland, the same source said, without providing details on which team the suspect played for.
Intelligence and propaganda
According to the national prosecutor’s office, the detainee is the fourteenth person arrested as part of an investigation into a “spy network collaborating with the Russian special services”. “The suspects, identified as foreigners from across the eastern border, carried out intelligence and propaganda activities once morest Poland,” the prosecutor’s office said.
The government added that one of the groups’ tasks was “monitoring railway routes” and spreading “propaganda once morest NATO, Poland and Polish government policy.”
Asked regarding this on Friday, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that the Russian embassy in Poland would “now inquire and we will receive more detailed information”. He also deplored “the very, very difficult work” of the Russian diplomatic mission in Warsaw, “due to the Russophobic position” of the Polish authorities.
