Earlier, Iran’s official news agency IRNA reported that the foreign ministers of Russia, Turkey, Azerbaijan and Armenia had been invited to the talks.
“We confirm that Lavrov’s talks in Tehran are planned for Monday,” Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova told state news agencies TASS and RIA Novosti.
The talks will take place amid tensions in the Middle East and unresolved disputes between Armenia and Azerbaijan, which launched a blitzkrieg attack on Armenian separatists in Nagorno-Karabakh last month.
Armenia later confirmed that its foreign minister would attend the meeting.
A list of all participants has yet to be announced, but Armenia’s northern neighbor Sakartvel said on Sunday it would not attend, its foreign ministry told Interpressnews.
Sakartvel applied for EU membership along with Ukraine and Moldova after Russia invaded its western neighbor in February 2022.
Moscow, which launched its invasion of Ukraine last February, has turned to Iran for military support and economic partnership as both countries face Western sanctions.
Western countries accuse Tehran of supporting Russia’s offensive in Ukraine and supplying it with large quantities of drones and other weapons.
