After the Government announced that it was stopping the meat exports for 15 days to force a price agreement with the field, the measure was reversed but generated a state of alert in the agricultural sector.
In this context, we communicate with Arturo Vierhellera member of the Mar Chiquita Rural Society, who spoke regarding the Government’s twists and turns with the sector.
Government measures and their impact on the sector
“Customs officially stated that it was not going to issue shipping permits for 15 daysit was more than a government rumor,” said Vierheller, who later completed: “It’s the same as always, it’s shooting himself in the foot. The more you export, the more you can supply to the domestic market”.
“Closing imports reduces the supply of meat in the domestic market, they continue to insist on failure,” shot the producer. “What is exported is not all the cuts of the cowmaking the rest of the animal turn to the domestic market”, he added.
Then, the interviewee said that the economy is on the brink of the end of the cycle: “There is a chaos and an absolute mismanagement of the economy”. “At the time it was an ideological issue, at this moment I only see despair,” snapped the expert.
Finally, Vierheller said that it is very difficult to recover a market once lost. “Uruguay, with seriousness and much less finances and resources than us, grew and has world-class livestock”he concluded.
