After the ruling bloc did not register mayoral primaries in the Ñuble region, the regional political committee, made up of the DC, PC, PL, CS, RD, PR, FRVS and PS – without participation of the PPD, which has been marginalized from the last instances-; issued a statement criticizing the actions of the latter party.
In addition to questioning that some decisions to be made regarding candidates are settled by the central level of each community, and demanding that the communal agreements in Bulnes and El Carmen be respected; The local representatives “vetoed” the PPD in a certain way, stating that “without the presence of the Party for Democracy at the regional level, the parties mentioned here will advance and advocate for the maximum unity of the center-left democratic forces.”
Furthermore, previously, the regional president of the PS, Brígida Hormazábal, had stated that among the causes of the failure of the primaries was the fact that “Senator Carvajal’s PPD registered candidates without consultation and outside of the agreements made in formally”, personalizing the differences in the parliamentarian for Ñuble.
“Petty personal interests”
In this regard, the regional president of the PPD, Yesenia Figueroa, responded that “responsibly, the PPD of Ñuble has not signed letters in the region, since rather than ordering the processes, it ultimately hinders them. Demanding names and definitions of possible candidates at the last minute are skirmishes that cloud a delicate political moment. Respectful of that instance, we do not make the mistake of airing the differences typical of coalitions that we maintain healthily,” she stated.
He added that “it must be noted that, for example, a general agreement was not reached at the level of governors, so this issue remains open at the national level, and in the region as well. It is not the responsibility of the PPD that primaries have not been registered in the region. There were 80 primaries and only 48 were registered. Not all parties had their candidates’ papers up to date, and that generated an administrative delay that prevented the total registration of primaries. But if you review, our party is the only one that has no objections to the registration of candidates before the Servel, due to the seriousness and rigor that we dedicate to these acts,” he said.
Regarding the definitions in El Carmen, Bulnes and San Fabián, which had primaries, “these are being reviewed at the national level. As a region we are part of something bigger than petty personal interests. Regarding the statements of the regional president of the PS, we will forward our formal complaints to the highest level. We will not allow the image of our senator Loreto Carvajal to be maligned or attempted to tarnish. We already suffered it within the Municipal Council of Chillán, where she cunningly attacks our councilor, Yanina Contreras. We will put a stop to this old way of doing politics,” said Figueroa.
Meanwhile, from the Frente Amplio, the regional president of CS, Francisca Leyton, expressed that “for us it is important that people know that we strive to reach agreements between those of us who share readings regarding the country and the region. That process, when we are eleven parties, is very complex. At Ñuble we wanted to talk at a local level to then communicate to our national directors what we expected for the primaries. Each party decided independently whether to join this regional table or leave everything in the hands of the central representatives in Santiago. These gestures of unity have been maturing throughout this government, and yet, unfortunately, it might be said that there are parties and local leaders who paddle their own canoe and do not feel challenged by calls for coordination,” she asserted.
However, he stressed, “this is not a crime. Each party can resolve its issues as it sees fit. Likewise, it does not mean that relations are broken, because the doors have never been closed for those who want to join the different instances and initiatives. That is also a wake-up call that encourages us to strengthen our communication within the ruling party, and to continue working together,” he stated.
César Calderón, regional president of the PR, for his part, maintained that “relations are not broken at all, and we continue to work together ahead of the municipal election in October. It happens, however, that in this part of the process each party assumes its own strategy for the final stretch of the negotiations, because the objective of making the names of the best candidates available to the public is still very much in force. We hope together in the coming weeks to have the final list of candidates to lead the communes of the region,” he stated.
