RPL Cup will not create the Cup of Russia following the BETCITY reform.
According to RB Sport, at today’s general meeting of the RPL, with a high degree of probability, the project to create the League Cup will be abandoned. This will be facilitated by the reform of the Cup of Russia.
The League Cup was conceived as a tournament that would make up for the lack of European competition. The initiative group of organizers agreed with partners (betting company BetBoom and Yandex broadcaster) on a total sponsorship contract worth regarding 3 billion rubles.
However, the RFU opposed the creation of the tournament – if it appears Cup of Russiaheld by the organization, would become the third most important tournament in the country, since its prize fund is several times lower than that of the championship and even the RPL Cup.
Negative letters were sent to the RPL from the main broadcaster and betting partner of the league. Also, some governors were asked to oppose the creation of a new tournament.
As a result, today, with a high degree of probability, the clubs will vote for organizing a hybrid of the Russian Cup and the RPL Cup, and take part of the sponsorship money RFS. The only remaining question is how and in what proportions the prize fund will be distributed.
