The life of a royal is not always as rosy as many would like it to be. You rush from appointment to appointment and are permanently in the public eye. Privacy? False alarm. This should be difficult, especially for members of the royal family by marriage, such as Kate Middleton.
Wherever she goes and stands, the wife of heir to the throne Prince William has to pay attention to what she does and how she presents herself. By now, following all these years, she should have gotten used to it. But what Kate Middleton really had to give up for life as a princess is now explained by a royals expert.
Kate Middleton had to ‘give up identity’
On Tuesday evening (May 17) ZDF ran a documentary regarding Kate and Camilla. The two women are currently the ones who should ensure sympathy among the people alongside their husbands. But the royal title also has its price, as historian Anna Whitelock explains in the documentary.
“They kind of have to give up their identity in a way, which is pretty misogynistic. They must represent the royal family, which sees itself as a company. It’s not regarding advancing yourself. You have to respect the unwritten rules that apply to royal women.”
Camilla also had a hard time
It’s easy to forget that Camilla also comes from a middle-class family background. She too had to find her place next to the then prince. Doing that is not that easy, as the Royals expert explains.
“When a woman marries into the royal family, she doesn’t have any say at first. She can then raise her voice when she has proven herself and fitted into her role. That includes adapting to men and supporting them.” Well, following wearing the crown on her head, Camilla should have made it.
