Again and once more you come across bands that have been around for years but have never come across them before. So too THE RODS from America that saw the light of day in 1980. The band’s history makes exciting reading, founded by David “Rock” Feinstein, a cousin of none other than Ronnie James Dio, who was also briefly active with the master in ELF, releasing four albums plus one live work in a short space of time, briefly sniffed the UK charts before it was over once more in 1986. In 2006 they got back together and have now released album number three with the catchy title “Rattle The Cage”.
Musically they move between classic hard rock and old school heavy metal. So you can find influences from DEEP PURPLEif you risk an ear on the first track “Now And Forever”, while “Hell Or High Water” is dominated by guitar blues, as heard from AEROSMITH knows.
When it comes to David Feinstein, I have to think of Steve “Lips” Kudlow most of the time ANVIL think, the similarity cannot be denied. In between, however, a certain Dee Snider (TWISTED SISTER), which wouldn’t be the worst conditions. David doesn’t do a bad job, but I only really warm to the singer’s organ following a long time and not 100 percent. Musically, however, the trio always delivers fine songs. There are always moments in which the instruments are given a lot of time to develop, like in “Wolves At The Door” with its long instrumental ending part.
Variety is also very important, which is what my thoughts turn to when it comes to “Cry Out Loud”. MANOWAR with his warlike style, while on “Metal Highways” speed is the key and Carl Canedy beats his heart out on the drums.
At the end, the two rockers “Play It Loud” and “Hearts Of Steel” do exactly what they should without surprising and that’s where the dog lies, THE RODS are a likeable and quite talented band, but unfortunately they don’t really stand out and there’s actually hardly anything left hanging. So you probably remained just average and so you are probably just an insider tip among many.
