Both the opposition and the government have called for demonstrations on Wednesday, August 28 in Caracas, one month after the presidential elections in Venezuela. Both marches could cause the closure of several roads in the east and center of the capital.

The opposition’s call for a demonstration under the slogan “Act kills a sentence” was announced by opposition leader María Corina Machado and the Command with Venezuela in rejection of the ratification of Nicolás Maduro’s victory by the Supreme Court of Justice (TSJ).

“One month after the victory of July 28, Venezuela and the world reject the fraud of Maduro and his regime,” reads the post that Comando con Venezuela made through its account on X (formerly Twitter).

For his part, Diosdado Cabello, first vice president of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV), urged the people of Caracas to participate in the mobilization to “celebrate” Nicolás Maduro’s victory in the elections.

“First month of the great popular victory of July 28. The revolutionary force will take to the streets to demonstrate as we Chavistas know how to do, with joy, enthusiasm, and open camaraderie. We are going to march throughout Venezuela to celebrate the victory,” Cabello said on August 26 during a press conference.

Ruling of the Electoral Chamber of the TSJ

On August 22, 2024, the Electoral Chamber of the TSJ ratified the CNE results that declared Nicolás Maduro the winner in the presidential elections of July 28.

According to the agency, the minutes presented by the ruling party coincide with the information from the voting machines. However, these results have not yet been made public.

After the ruling was announced, Edmundo González Urrutia rejected the TSJ’s decision and, in his opinion, aggravates Venezuela’s post-electoral crisis.

“Sovereignty resides untransferably in the people. The organs of the State emanate from popular sovereignty and are subject to it. They will not usurp the truth,” González wrote on his X account.

The TSJ’s decision also provoked rejection from the international community, which considered that without the publication of results they cannot recognize the victory announced by the CNE.

The governments of Paraguay, Argentina, Costa Rica, Chile, Ecuador, the United States, Guatemala, Panama, Peru, the Dominican Republic and Uruguay issued a joint statement on August 23 to reject the TSJ ruling.
