Several roads in Caracas were closed on Wednesday, August 28, as part of the organization of opposition and government rallies one month after the presidential elections. These closures affected vehicular traffic in part of the city.

Opposition leader María Corina Machado called for a rally in support of leader Edmundo González, under the slogan “A record kills a sentence.” The meeting point for the demonstration was on Francisco de Miranda Avenue in the Chacao municipality, near the Lido shopping center, and it began at 11:00 am. The protest was also simultaneous in the interior of the country and in several cities abroad.

The United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV) also called on its followers to mobilize in support of Nicolás Maduro in Caracas and throughout the country.

The roads that were closed

Libertador Avenue in the municipality of Chacao was partially closed early in the morning. The measure affected the road heading west.

The closure of Urdaneta Avenue in the Libertador municipality, at the corner of Platanal, was also recorded. According to the profile of La Máquina del Aire en X, vehicles were diverted to the corner of Desamparados and public transport circulated on the roads parallel to that main avenue.

The PSUV announced that it would also close the roads on Universidad Avenue, Bolívar Avenue and around Plaza O’Leary, so drivers had to take alternate routes to move around the Libertador municipality.

Opposition rally

The rally on Francisco de Miranda Avenue, in front of the Lido shopping center, under the slogan “A record kills a sentence,” began at 11:00 am in support of the standard-bearer of the Democratic Unitary Platform, Edmundo González.

Attendees began arriving at the venue at 10:50 am with their flags and signs rejecting the results of the presidential elections that the National Electoral Council (CNE) announced as giving victory to Nicolás Maduro without the minutes having been published, and which were later ratified by the Supreme Court of Justice (TSJ).

One of the people present at the rally said: The Diary the feeling that accompanies it.

“The only thing left is faith,” said the woman who held in her hands a cardboard cutout of José Gregorio Hernández’s silhouette covered with some of the minutes published by the opposition.

The Diary He noted that other protesters were carrying signs with slogans alluding to the release of political prisoners and the closure of detention centres in the country, which they described in their signs as “torture centres”.

Citizens were crowded in both directions of Francisco de Miranda Avenue, in Chacao.

It was also observed that officers from the Bolivarian National Police (PNB) were in the area to control traffic due to the closure of the road near the Lido center.
