The General Directorate of National Security revealed the toll of traffic accidents within urban areas during the week extending from April 29 to May 5.
According to a report from the directorate, 1,856 traffic accidents were recorded in urban areas, resulting in the death of 25 people and the injury of 2,593 others, 101 of whom were seriously injured.
The same source attributed the main reasons leading to the occurrence of these accidents, in their order, to drivers’ inattention, failure to respect the right of priority, failure to pay attention to pedestrians, failure to leave a safety distance, excessive speed, changing direction without a signal, and failure to respect stopping. Imposed by a “Stop” sign, failure to control, unauthorized change of direction, failure to respect the stop imposed by a red traffic light, driving on the left side of the road, driving while intoxicated, driving in the prohibited direction, and defective overtaking.
Regarding surveillance and restraining operations in the traffic area and the Golan, the security services were able to record 40,648 violations, complete 6,506 reports that were referred to the competent public prosecution, in addition to issuing 34,142 conciliation fines.
The amount obtained reached 7 million, 536 thousand and 825 dirhams, while the number of vehicles placed in the municipal impound reached 4,397 vehicles, the number of documents withdrawn was 6,506 documents, and the number of vehicles that were subject to arrest was 193 vehicles.
