Common postcards are the salami and cheese vendor who circulates with a wicker basket in the downtown area, or the empanada vendors who set up shop in different busy corners of San Juan, especially on weekends, and there are also those that are located under bridges of the Circunvalación to offer baked goods, vegetables, fruits and/or sandwiches. All that is street food vending It does not have the corresponding authorization, so the health of the person who consumes it may be at risk.

From Health Medicine Every year they remember the dangers involved in consuming this type of product, which in many cases can seriously complicate people’s health. But they not only insist on avoiding consuming street food, but also report it, so that action can be taken on it, since, being street vendors, carrying out controls is usually complicated.

Saint John weather dialogue with Roque Elizondo, head of the Department of Sanitary Medicine of the Ministry of Public Health, one of the areas that has the Bromatology division, who reminded all San Juan residents that the sale of street food of any kind is not authorized in the province.

“If you buy, you should know that your health can be damaged because it is a product that is not approved, does not have information such as the date of manufacture or expiration, or does not have the corresponding cold chain”assured Dr. Elizondo.

It is important to remember that Food purchased on the street carries a large number of bacteria and parasites, which can cause gastrointestinal diseases, hepatitis, typhoid fever, hemolytic uremic syndrome, salmonellosis, shigellosis, among others. In many cases they lead to hospitalizations, and in more serious cases it can cause irreversible damage.

In this regard, he pointed out that from his area a strong prevention and promotion campaign is carried out to reduce the incidence of hemolytic uremic syndrome, a disease caused by an Escherichia Coli bacterium that affects children from 3 to 16 years of age and that in more serious cases Causes irreversible kidney damage.

“We work a lot on these cases, because, for example, there were cases of intoxicated adolescents who acquired this disease, where at one stage it is disabling, because it leads to chronic kidney failure. We had a recent case where some parents bought sausages on the street, ate it, and the next day they had to hospitalize their adolescent son with a diagnosis of hemolytic uremic syndrome. They filed a complaint, we went to the place where those products came from and we made the total confiscation and closure, because there was no place of origin, date of production, they did not comply with any type of authorization. With these kinds of places we don’t have any kind of contemplation”remarked the holder of Sanitary Medicine.

To avoid this type of case, from Sanitary Medicine they insist on not to purchase this type of product and to make a personal complaint in the Food Division of the Ministry of Public Health, and in the Department of Sanitary Medicine. If the complainant has the food in question, the professional’s request is that they take it, so that they can carry out the corresponding tests and determine if the food is contaminated or not.

“These dissemination, prevention and communication campaigns give results. We see it with the sale of street fish during Easter, where we began to carry out strong controls and for four to five years we have not registered cases of poisoning and vendors are no longer seen on the sidewalks, where they used to be. People often do not know the consequences of eating something that is in poor condition and it is important, since food, just as it nourishes you, can also make you sick”ends Elizondo.
