More and more cancer in young people
Every year, an increasing number of young people are affected by cancer. An alarming finding, but what should we remember? Here is some information to understand this increase.
A worrying phenomenon among people under 50
The past decade has seen a worrying rise in cancer among young people. The increase? Three new cases per 100,000 people between 2010 and 2019 in the United States. But what is even more alarming is that these cancers are not the ones we are used to. Young people develop different forms of cancer than older people.
Gastrointestinal cancers on the rise
Among cancers occurring early, gastrointestinal cancers have the highest incidence. bowel cancer, in particular, has become the nightmare of young adults. But others, like cancers of the appendix, bile ducts and pancreas are also on the increase.

What are the causes ?
If age remains the main risk factor, other elements are pointed out. Does our way of life have a role to play? An ultra-processed diet, a sedentary lifestyle, rising obesity, overuse of antibiotics and pollution are all on the suspect list at the moment.
Data to be interpreted with caution
While these statistics are concerning, they should not be taken at face value. As Benjamin Koh, a medical researcher at the National University of Singapore, points out, certain populations, such as black people, may be underrepresented in these studies.
