The Rising Stars of Peru’s Under 23 Team: Foreign Talents and Local Gems

Quietly, without the noise of the adult team, the under 23 team begins its process with small microcycles for which there are players born until 2001. Three foreigners already stand out on that list, one from Argentine Racing, Catriel Cabellos, another from the Spanish Intercity , Alessandro Burlamaqui and a surprising one, from Spanish Valladolid, Enrique Peña.

Outside of those players, among the locals, Cristal is the team that contributes the most with 4 elements: the left-handed back Fabricio Lora, the back Alejandro Posito and the mixed media Gonzalo Aguirre and Adrián Ascues. There are also contributions from provinces such as goalkeeper Diego Enríquez, from Binacional; the middle Kenji Cabrera, from Melgar; the striker Didier La Torre, from Cienciano; forward Lucas Cantoro, from Cusco; the left-handed back Sebastián Cavero, from Melgar, or the right-handed Emilio Saba, from UTC.

Several players were not taken into account who also fit the age but are either part of the senior team, or are part of Universitario, Cristal and Alianza in the fight for the definition of the Clausura. We are referring to the goalkeeper Diego Romero, the attackers Piero Quispe and Yuriel Celi (‘U’), the defender Rafael Lutiger, the winger Joao Grimaldo (Cristal) and the striker Juan Pablo Goicochea (Alianza). Striker Fabrizio Rocca, from Boys, also finds the times, but since Juan Reynoso takes this into account with the adult, Chemo preferred not to mention him. The same thing happens with the midfielder Jesús Castillo, from the Portuguese Gil Vicente, who is already part of the main Peru.

Neither Kluivert Aguilar of the Belgian Lommel nor Fonchi Barco of the Uruguayan Defensor have been mentioned – perhaps because of the coach’s wishes, perhaps because he will do so later. In any case, Videna insists that it is an open call and that more rehearsals will be held between now and the weeks prior to the tournament.

When asked if Oliver Sonne, the Dane who will play for the adult team, is old enough, the FPF told us no. That Sonne is from November 2000 and except for a permit from Conmebol under new rules, he might not be part of the Chemo del Solar team. Just as Sonne is at the limit, his case has generated a certain expectation.
