The Rising Price of Chicken Eggs in Mali: Investigating the Surge in Cost and its Implications

On the Malian market, the price of eggs continues to increase. Cell is extremely expensive both at wholesalers and retailers. How can we justify this surge in the price of the cell? From our investigations, it appears that an entire chain is blocked.

A high consumption product, the price of chicken eggs continues to increase. Despite the increase in the number of poultry breeders, the market is not supplied with sufficient quantities at an affordable price. Sign of the blocking of an entire chain.

To justify the surge in price, several reasons are given. First the period. Poultry farmers indicate that this (wintering) is not conducive to breeding. This leads to a scarcity of laying hens on the market with its repercussions on eggs.

Investigations show that the price of poultry feed has also increased. The cost is thus strongly felt on farms. “The bag (more precisely that of Koudijs), formerly sold at 35,000 F CFA, is currently sold at 38,000 F CFA by wholesalers. The same product is sold at 40,000 F CFA, or even 42,000 F CFA. Corn, one of the basic foods for poultry, costs 20,000 CFA francs per bag. However, oyster shell powder which was 13,000 F CFA now costs 15,000 F CFA. This situation means that the price of egg cells is also experiencing a dizzying increase. The cell which, initially, was sold at 2300 F CFA, is sold today at between 2600 F CFA and 3000 F CFA in places”develops a breeder.

Other reasons? Medical monitoring of chickens is much more complex during this winter period. Added to this is the cost of transport which has also increased due to global inflation which has not been without consequences on the price of fuel.

Due to this dizzying increase in the price per cell, many families are doing without eggs on their menu. However, nutritionists indicate that it is a good food product for health. “One large egg contains over 6g of the highest quality protein. It is good for health because it contains proteins, especially the yolk which contains more protein than the egg white. It also helps transport oxygen to cells and prevent anemia”assure nutritionists.
