Naturism is popular in Belgium. The number of practitioners is exploding in our country. According to the latest figures from the Belgian Naturist Federation, nearly half a million people practice the joys of nudism and the activities that ensue: naturist beaches or campsites, public saunas, etc.

During this summer period, we went to Bredene, the only nudist beach. At the turn of the dunes, we see Michel, naked on his towel and accompanied by his dog. Quickly, the man in his seventies and originally from Spa tells us freely what led him to practice naturism.
“I was immediately at ease”
“I have been a pensioner for fourteen years, I sold my house in Spa, in the Province of Liège to come and settle in Bredene. And since I lived by the sea, I began to practice naturism. I only have to cross one street to get to the naturist beach. I’m not going to say that it was a long-decided choice but it was looking good. And when I arrived the first time, I felt immediately at ease,” says Michel.
Even if the sun is not there, a few courageous people like Michel have still come to take some fresh air on this beach which, from year to year, has seen an upsurge in enthusiasts of all ages. A few tens of meters from Michel, we can see, among other things, a couple with their two children.
And as on a traditional beach, each naturist goes regarding his business, without bothering his deckchair neighbours. What unites them: a more relaxed way of life. “You know, people are pretty respectful of nature. Those who practice naturism tend to leave less trash on the beach. It’s much cleaner here than in other busier places, ”continues the Spadois.
“We would like not to look at the private parts”
Being naked does not give all the rights! Each year, the Federation of Belgian Naturism recalls the three golden rules to adopt: self-respect, respect for others and respect for the environment. Indeed, as a naturist, you must ensure that your gaze does not remain blocked on a tattoo, a bodily imperfection or any other difference that another naturist might display.
But in reality, according to Michel, it seems quite different. “We wish we weren’t looking at each other’s private parts, but inevitably everyone tends to look at you there instead. You have to be honest. But logically, the naturist should not be interested and aim for the private parts”, says Michel, with a lot of humour.
On this beach where they are few given the weather, Michel will be the only one to agree to tell the story of the naturist life. Its beach neighbors, meanwhile, favor discretion and anonymity.
As a reminder, in 2000, the creation of the naturist beach of Bredene, 300 meters long, was made possible thanks to an agreement between the political and judicial authorities.
