The Rising Incidence of Lung Cancer in Women: Exploring the Role of Wood Burning

2023-10-09 14:02:52

Lung cancer is the third most common cancer and the leading cause of cancer death in France. For the year 2023, 52,777 new cases were estimated with 33,438 men affected and 19,339 women. Although it has long been considered a male cancer, it is now increasingly identified in women.

The evolution of cases of this cancer in the female population raises questions. Indeed, while the incidence of lung cancer is generally stable, or even decreasing, in men and mortality is decreasing, this is not the case in women. On the contrary: female mortality incidence rates have increased sharply since 1990 (except among women born following 1965, for whom the latest available figures show an inflection in mortality). This phenomenon is essentially linked to the increase in tobacco consumption among women.“, reports the National Cancer Institute (InCA).

More lung cancers

A recent study looked at the link between wood burning and the incidence of lung cancer in women, as relayed by Medicine. This study was conducted using data from 50,226 women without a history of lung cancer. “During an average follow-up of 11.3 years, 347 cases of medically confirmed lung cancer were noted. Overall, 62.3% of the study population declared the presence of an indoor fireplace/wood stove in their home and 20.6% declared annual use greater than 30 days/year. Compared to those who did not have a fireplace/wood stove, women who used their fireplace/wood stove more than 30 days per year had a high rate of lung cancer“, report the authors of the study.

Higher use of wood stoves and fireplaces is associated with a 70% higher incidence of lung cancer. (…) Our prospective analysis of a cohort of American women revealed that increasing frequency of indoor fireplace/wood stove use was associated with lung cancer even among women without never smoked“, summarize the conclusions of the study.
