“The Rising Cost of Sauces: Understanding Inflation and Price Increases in Mayonnaise and Ketchup”

In the consumer basket, in one year, one product has particularly increased: the sauce. +50% for mayonnaise and +55% for ketchup. Inflation, the war in Ukraine, sugar, tomatoes, the cost of transport… The reasons are numerous and affect the whole sector hard. Today, putting sauce on your meat or on your fries is not yet a luxury, but we are getting closer.

To explain the price of sauces, you have to turn around the pot: the glass jar has experienced 3 price increases in one year and its price has doubled (+ 100%). The lid made partly of plastic has also increased: +40%. Vinegar and oil increased by 30%. As for egg yolks, they also doubled (+100%).

In fact, the recipe for all the sauces has been stinging a bit for the past few years. “Me, I started in 85 and I have never experienced commodity prices like today”notes Philipe Colon, managing director of the Mestdagh group.

All sauces and all brands

If we add the cost of energy with more than 50,000 euros per month just for one company, salaries with 11% inflation, gas, the cost of transport… Result? In just over a year, on the table, prices for ALL sauces and ALL brands have increased by almost 50%. “Between 43 and 53% depending on the sauce… There was already a small increase at the beginning of April 2022. But then the 2023 increase is still spectacular”continues the managing director of the Mestdagh group.

The hope of a drop is envisaged next September, according to experts. But for that, it would take a resumption of work in Ukraine, the end of the bird flu and stability in oil prices. In other words, a more difficult and even more uncertain recipe than making mayonnaise take on a corner of the table…
