The Rise of Tegenaria: Exploring the Nature and Habits of Spiders in Homes and Gardens

You may have noticed: spiders abound in homes and gardens. We are in the middle of the spider breeding season and many of you have the impression that they are particularly big this year. According to specialists… It’s very possible.

Thick, hairy and rather imposing, the tegenaria lives in our homes all year round. Males measure approximately 3 centimeters and females, 5 centimeters.

This year, they took advantage of the weather: “We had a pretty hot summer, we saw a lot of flies and specks in the houses. Automatically, spiders will have more prey. Potentially, we can have spiders that are slightly larger“, explains Rudy Caparros, professor of entomology at ULiège. “I haven’t measured them, but it’s possible“, he explains.

Those that are visible at the end of summer are actually males looking for a female to mate with.

These little creatures have their uses inside: “These are spiders that make webs in the corners of houses. We can have flies, flies, woodlice which they can feed on. We can see that these are not very bad spiders.“, explains Rudy Caparros.

The tegenaria is completely harmless. Some kill it, others catch it with a glass or a handkerchief and release it in the garden. In a few weeks, once the females are fertilized, they will become more discreet.
