What will we find in our Christmas stocking? A second-hand gift or a new gift? There are those who don’t mind receiving a second-hand gift. And those, who for nothing in the world would offer something that has already been used.
Turning to the second hand is perhaps also a question of age. Last year, only one in four people over 55 bought a second-hand item. But a little more than half of those under 34 have made this choice.
Alessia is a fan of second-hand sites. “I go to Vinted almost every day. There are deals, new things sold at low prices. It’s advantageous and interesting to go and see that. I bought my outfit there for Christmas. It was at 20 euros initially, and it was 7 euros on the site”she confides.
So trendy, second hand? Direction Cash Converters, one of the pioneers of the sector in Belgium. “When I launched the gift voucher in 2017, people thought I was a bit crazy and today we see that it works. People are thinking of second hand to please. It has become almost chic, It’s a smart purchase.”said the general manager.
For 25 years, the brand has been offering consoles, video games, computer equipment, but also household appliances, tools and even mobile phones. A sign that the second hand is popular. The general director notes an increase in attendance in November and December. “There is the Black Friday period which already pushes people into stores. And we see that it increases from year to year.”
In this store, it’s difficult to find someone who agrees to speak in front of our camera. Buying second-hand Christmas gifts can be embarrassing if you don’t want your loved ones to find out.
Denis intends to give a piece of jewelry. “We can sometimes find very old jewelry and new ones. We buy when we have a crush. The price is interesting. It has nothing to do with the details in the store. Sometimes, I see that it’s 200 euros for a silver bracelet. Here, it’s 20 or 40 euros, and you have beautiful jewelry”she says.
There is a world of colorful stuffed animals and colorful toys, where second hand is not taboo. Marsuline often comes to BBKaline to buy gifts for her granddaughter. “It’s good for the wallet and the planet. It’s become a habit, having to go and look in stores, we’re going to go second hand”she declares.
An ecological argument shared by other customers. But the manager has noticed a different type of audience for several months. “Before, we had people who like the principle of being eco-responsible. Now, with the energy crisis and products increasing everywhere, we have people who come with a small budget.”
According to a survey carried out by the site 2ememain.be, financial reasons top the list of reasons why consumers buy second-hand (66.7%). Next comes pleasure (41.3%) and in third place is the environment (38.8%).
New or second-hand, the most important thing is to know the person to whom you are giving the gift. In Santa’s sack, there will be new gifts and second-hand gifts. On December 24, there will also be dissatisfied people as usual. According to a study organized on the resales of gifts, one in five Belgians does not like what they found under the tree.
