The “too woke” turn that productions have taken recently boils down to a couple of women in Buzz Lightyear, a gay character in Avalonia: the Strange Journey, the choice of a dark-skinned actress in La Petite Mermaid, and – spoiler alert – Snow White will not be white as snow in the very next remake of the cartoon.
On the set of Quotidien, Ambre Chalumeau produces a column on the theme. She deplores that the CEO has pointed out the “woke messages” of the films to justify their failures, and questions the production rate, which covets quantity rather than quality. The journalist gives counter-examples of progressive films that have made a breakthrough, showing that the progressive side of feature films is not synonymous with flops. She notably names Barbie, released in July and having exploded sales, and Black Panther, a box office hit and Disney production.
