Patrick Martin won the election of the presidency of Medef on Thursday. Before taking office in mid-July, franceinfo paints a portrait of the new “boss of bosses”.

His victory was expected. Patrick Martin was chosen to chair the Mouvement des entreprises de France (Medef), Thursday, July 6, after an electronic ballot in which some 1,120 major voters – from professional federations and territorial branches of the employers’ organization – were invited to participate. In detail, the new “boss of bosses” for the next five years won by a wide margin with 73.18% of the vote, against 26.82% for his opponent, Dominique Carlac’h. Franceinfo tells you more about the successor to Geoffroy Roux de Bézieux, who will take office on July 17.

The current number 2 of the Medef

Deputy Chairman of the Medef for five years, Patrick Martin, 63, assured the beginning of June in the columns of the Sunday newspaper what “management activism” was for him a “second life”. Involved in the employers’ organization since 1995, he was first elected president of the Rhône-Alpes federation, then of that of Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes in 2016. He was then a candidate for the presidency of the organization, in 2018, before joining the team of Geoffroy Roux de Bézieux.

Unsurprisingly, this time he positioned himself as a continuation of the team in place. During the campaign, he boasted of “extremely significant progress” obtained under his predecessor, like the reduction in production taxes. He defended a program articulated around the need for growth to resolve the climate crisis and ensure the sustainability of the French social model.

“Without growth, I do not see how we will finance massive investments (…) to maintain the decarbonization trajectory, I do not see how we will create the jobs and the purchasing power to which our fellow citizens very legitimately aspire, I do not see not how we will sustainably balance our social systems.

Among his other proposals, there was also the reduction of social contributions beyond 2.5 smic and the continuation of the reduction in production taxes. He also came out in favor of the reform of vocational high schools, or for greater joint action with trade unions, denouncing a “historical tendency towards nationalization” social relationships.

He also promised to Release to enter into negotiations “before the end of the year” with the unions on the employment of seniors. Proposals often close to those of his opponent, with whom the ideological differences were insignificant. To stand out, the candidate played the card of experience and knowledge of the files, recalls The Parisianafter five years as the right arm of Geoffroy Roux de Bézieux.

waist supports

Patrick Martin’s candidacy has attracted many supporters, including the powerful Union of Metal Industries and Metallurgy Trades (UIMM), the French Building Federation and the National Federation of Public Works. The candidate also claimed the support of representatives of “90 of the 100 national employers’ federations, 95% of territorial Medefs and 100% of regional Medefs”according to a press release.

When he is not at Medef – now more than a single day a week – Patrick Martin runs the family business Martin Belaysoud Expansion, of which he is also the majority shareholder. Founded in 1829, it specializes in the distribution of equipment for construction and industry and today has 3,000 employees at 220 sites in France as well as in Morocco and Slovakia.

Belonging to the management team of Medef and being at the head of a company is not “not incompatible”he estimated with the Sunday newspaper. If he does not yet mention the date of his retirement, he had already announced to Release that this campaign for the presidency of Medef would be the last, even in the event of defeat. In five years, he will indeed be 68 years old and according to him, “one cannot embark on these experiments if one is not passionate”.
