The Rise of Olive Oil Production: Morocco Ranks 2nd in the Arab Region

Morocco ranks 2nd among countries in the Arab region in terms of olive oil production, with a harvest exceeding 217 million liters last season (ranked 9th globally).

With an estimated harvest of 217 million liters, Morocco ranks second among countries in the Arab region and ninth globally in terms of olive oil production.

As for Tunisia, it comes in first place with 261 million liters. Ranked third exporting country of olive oil on the world scale, Tunisia is taking a giant step in the export of local products.

Syria ranks third in the Arab world, with an output of around 115 million liters, making it the world’s seventh largest producer of olive oil.

In fourth position in the Arab world, we find Algeria with a production of more than 99.1 million liters, and Egypt occupies the fifth position with a production of 21.7 million liters last season.

Indeed, Morocco, which occupies the second position, has made great progress in improving the quality of olive oil.

The country puts considerable effort into assessing the quality and potential of the olive oils produced in the Kingdom.

Recently, olive oil has been the subject of several studies which have so far revealed a strong qualitative potential to be valued, in particular the oils produced in modern oil mills thanks to the national strategy of modernization of the manufacturing sector and the development of integrated projects in certain regions.

In addition, the Green Morocco plan has raised the olive sector to the rank of priorities in terms of agricultural development and aims to make it a modern and efficient sector.

Cradle of olive cultivation, Morocco stands out as a unique model in the Arab region and as one of the world’s leading exporters of olive oil.

Morocco is home to one of the largest solar power plants in the world. Thanks to its long sunny days, which provide more chlorophyll in plants in general and more taste in Moroccan olive oil in particular.

This pronounced taste of Moroccan olive oil comes from the many varieties of Moroccan olive, among others: Picholine, Dahbia, Menara, Haouzia, Arbequina, Arbossana, Koroneiki.

All these varieties are characterized by: a strong adaptation to Moroccan pedoclimatic conditions, a double purpose (table olives and oil) and a high polyphenol rate.

The production season of olive oil in Morocco is spread throughout the months: October, November and December, and the cultivation of the olive tree covers a large part of the Kingdom, in particular, Meknes, Marrakech, Beni Mellal , Fes, Ouazzane, Casablanca, Taourirt, Khemisset, Agadir.

The second largest exporter of olive oil in the Arab world, Morocco ranks with around 9.1 million liters, followed closely by Syria with 16.3 million liters. In fourth position is Palestine, with exports estimated at around 6.5 million litres, followed by Jordan with around 4.9 million litres.

At the top of the list of world olive oil exporting countries we find Spain (509 billion liters), followed by Italy (255 million liters).

As for importing countries, Saudi Arabia ranks first in the Arab world, having imported 32.6 million liters last season. It is followed far behind by Egypt and Morocco, which both imported around 4.3 million litres. Iraq comes third, having imported 1.6 million liters according to estimates by the International Olive Council.

In contrast, Algeria, Tunisia, Syria, Libya, Jordan, Lebanon and Palestine did not import any amount of olive oil last season.
