A local court concluded that two British teenagers are key members of the international hacker group ‘LAPSUS $’, which has been attacking global conglomerates in succession since 2021. However, it was reported that they did not inquire into the intention of the crime because they suffered from autism.

According to the BBC on the 23rd (local time), the Southwark Criminal Court jury found that Arion Kurtazi (18) and A (17), whose names were not disclosed, committed crimes such as computer hacking, blackmail, and fraud as members of Rapsus. has concluded However, not all Rapsus members were captured.

Rapsus is known mainly for teenagers from England and Brazil, and is also called ‘digital thieves’. In October 2021, he hacked the Brazilian Ministry of Health and opened a telegram channel for intimidation. It became known worldwide in February of last year when it leaked internal information by hacking global companies such as Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics, Microsoft (MS), and Nvidia one following another.

They showed a different appearance from existing hacker organizations by notifying the news of the leaked information on social media and asking the public regarding the next attack target. Rather than negotiating, they focused on extracting information from the attack target, congratulating themselves on their successful crime and mocking the victims. For this reason, there was an expert analysis that the goal was to enhance fun and status rather than to make money.

Previously, Kurtazi and A met online in July 2021 to hack the BT·EE servers and data files of large British telecommunications companies and demanded 3.1 million pounds (approximately 5.227 billion won). Although they did not receive the money at the time, they stole regarding 100,000 pounds (regarding 168 million won) from their cryptocurrency accounts using the SIM card information of the five victims.

The two men were arrested in January of the following year and continued to commit crimes even following they were released during the investigation. Then, in February of the same year, he was caught once more in the process of hacking Nvidia, a US semiconductor company. Later, Kurtazi was released on bail with conditions such as a ban on internet access and stayed in a hotel, but was found to be involved in hacking online banks Revolut, Uber, and Rockstar Games once more.

The trial lasted regarding two months. However, Kurtazi and A did not appear in court on the advice of doctors that they were ‘unfit to attend due to autism’. The jury also judged only whether they committed the crime, and did not separately inquire into the intent of the crime. Kurtazi will be held in custody pending his next trial.
