The day following his party’s overwhelming victory in the Dutch legislative elections, what might Geert Wilders have said to himself when he looked in the mirror? The tidal wave of the far right is a surprise. The Freedom Party (PVV), a sovereignist and Islamophobic party, came first, winning 37 seats out of the 150 in the Lower House (+20), ahead of the left-ecologists alliance of Frans Timmermans with 25 seats (+8 ) and the center-right VVD (24 seats; -10). The PVV has never achieved such success. Leader Geert Wilders, “Dutch Donald Trump”, has something to boast regarding. But it is still far too early for him to see himself in the prime minister’s clothes.
