The Rise of Chinese Self-Developed Passenger Jumbo Jet: Advantages of C919 Over Boeing and Airbus

The C919, a Chinese self-developed passenger jumbo jet, has some advantages over established foreign rivals, a European industry expert said.

“It is still very early to tell, but we can say that it is not impossible that the C919 will become a rival of large established companies, such as Boeing and Airbus”, said Andrea Giuricin, the CEO of the company TRA. Consulting specialized in transport.

On May 28, the C919 completed its maiden commercial flight from Shanghai to Beijing operated by China Eastern Airlines, marking its official entry into the civil aviation market.

The C919 project was launched in 2007. Developed by the Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (COMAC), the first C919 rolled off the production lines in Shanghai in November 2015 and its maiden flight was completed in 2017.

According to Andrea Giuricin, the first advantage of the C919 might lie in the fact that it “plays at home” in China. With China accounting for almost one-fifth of global air traffic and enjoying a higher growth rate than air traffic annually, more than the United States and Europe, the country is well on its way to becoming the largest air traffic market in the world by 2050, he notes.

According to L’Usine Nouvelle, a French technology publication, the C919 will be more powerful than the Boeing 737 and Airbus 320. It might also rival these aircraft in terms of fuel efficiency.
