Far from the time when only Monopoly reigned, board games are currently experiencing a sharp increase in popularity mainly due to their diversity, their quality, but also due to the pandemic.

“The world of board games is in turmoil. We still sell several copies of classics like Scrabble, Monopoly or Trouble, but we see that the clientele is excited and wants to try new concepts, particularly in Quebec,” underlines Paule Rancourt, general manager of Cadeau KID
“The COVID period has definitely been an accelerator. Hundreds of thousands of people found themselves at home not knowing what to do, so board games suddenly became the activity par excellence,” adds Michel Bédard, co-owner of La Revanche.
For his part, the manager of the Imaginaire store in Laurier Québec, Jean-Philippe Giguère, believes that games are much more accessible today than they used to be.
“I don’t want to insult those who like old games, but board games are being made good and accessible. They are much more attractive and they have improved in terms of duration too. It no longer takes three hours to play a game and you are able to finish it on a Tuesday evening, for example,” he explains.

A popular gift
As the holidays approach, Mr. Giguère explains that board games are “still an extremely popular gift,” while the store has been overflowing with customers in recent weeks.
“It’s exceptional, it seems like people only give board games at Christmas. Yes, we sell Lego and lots of other things,” he mentions with a laugh.

“For a while, board games were considered a gift for children, but now there really is something for all tastes, all ages and no matter the number of players,” adds the manager.
Quebec stands out
If the popularity of board games has been skyrocketing for some time, this is also the case for certain Quebec creations which have stood out internationally.
“We are lucky to have extremely talented Quebec board game creators. Maxime Tardif, for example who created Earth, which is the game of the year. So it’s incredible to have Quebec games recognized internationally,” underlines Jean-Philippe Giguère.
“One thing is certain, it bodes well for the future,” he concluded.
