According to the FPS Mobility, 11,550 automatic transmission driving licenses have been issued since January 1. This represents 9.5% of all B permits issued in 2023, i.e. 2% more than last year and double that of 4 years ago. In 2022, the automatic transmission license rate was 7.5%, compared to 4.2% in 2019.
The reasons for this increase
One in 2 cars in Belgium is now sold with an automatic gearbox. This is the case for all hybrid and electric cars which are automatically automatic. In addition, candidates anticipate the fact that in the future, all cars will no longer have a manual gearbox.
Others do not want to get bogged down in changing gears and finally, some drivers already operate in a family world where the automatic gearbox has become the norm.
A major drawback
The holder who passed his license for an automatic gearbox (B78 license) cannot drive a car with a manual gear change. To do this, he must retake a license with driving school hours.
Conversely, a driver who has passed his license with a manual gearbox can drive all cars. Driving schools have adapted in this way: last year, there was only one automatic car for 5 offices. Now there is at least one per office.
Driving schools who estimate that training with an automatic gearbox might be shorter, because according to them, mastering the clutch takes between six and eight hours of lessons.
Mélissa, a young girl applying for a driving license, testifies regarding this choice. She learned to drive automatic, even though her family tried to change her mind. “I’m told to do it manually and then why not go with an automatic“, she says. “It is true that when you have to choose a car, it is sometimes more likely to buy a used automatic. : it’s much more expensive and not yet very accessible, that makes you think“.
