At the age of 25, Marco Odermatt has already arrived at the Ski Olympus. He is a two-time world champion, Olympic champion and two-time overall World Cup winner. Last season he set a new record with 2042 World Cup points in the overall standings.
What’s it like to be the best? Odermatt answers this question in an interview with the “Daily Gazette” as follows: «Very cool. I experience things and emotions that I would not experience otherwise. But you also give away a large part of your life as common property in public.”
Always being the center of attention, always having a camera pointed at you, doesn’t always seem to be fun for the modest native of Central Switzerland. “Everyone knows me. Everyone wants something from me,” he says. Sometimes that stresses him out. “If you want to do something normal on a Saturday in the summer and you never really have any peace, then there comes a moment when you’d rather not do that.”

For this reason, he is “not often lured into the normal exit anymore,” as Odermatt says. “You want to be normal for a few days, but that’s hardly possible anymore. It is quickly looked, talked, photographed. » That is “one of the disadvantages of being famous”.
In his childhood it was not his big goal to become the shooting star in the ski circus. “As a boy, I never wanted to be the best, just a ski racer,” says Odermatt. As a child, you have no idea what success entails. “You only see the beautiful things, the victories, the medals. The many mandatory appointments, public life – I never thought of that.”
“Maybe losing will make me a fool”
On the other hand, there is tremendous success. And the pressure that comes with success. “The victories are now extremely expected from the outside,” says the 25-year-old. “That will be the challenge in the next few years when I suddenly no longer win 13, but five or one race a year.”
That can also become a mental challenge. “Also that you don’t lose your joy. And that you drive for yourself and not for others,” says Odermatt. “Over time, you feel like you have half a nation behind you that expects something.” In addition to the high expectations, the man from Nidwalden also reaped a lot of praise and recognition, and not just in relation to his sporting achievements. “Rather like that than saying: He skis well, but is otherwise a fool.”
However, he does not want to call himself a multi-talent. He is not creative, says Odermatt. “I’m bad at drawing, painting, singing, dancing.” Also, he’s not that patient. And above all, he is a bad loser. However, in his career so far he has been on the winning side much more often. How does Odermatt deal with defeats? «That will only show. Maybe then I’ll become a fool by losing, who knows.”
