The Guatemalan government is implementing a security plan on the border with Mexico, where levels of violence due to drug trafficking and organized crime are increasing.

The Guatemalan government has reinforced security at border points with Mexico, where dozens of people are fleeing drug trafficking and organized crime violence to seek refuge in communities in Huehuetenango, according to an AFP news agency cable citing President Bernardo Arévalo.

At a press conference in San Marcos, this Tuesday, August 13, Arévalo indicated that the Guatemalan Army with the National Civil Police (PNC) work together for the border security plan with Mexico called Ring of Fire.

He explained that this plan seeks to guarantee the security of Guatemalans and prevent the conflict in Mexico from affecting the country.

Regarding the group of Mexican refugees in Cuilco, HuehuetenangoArévalo explained that they are working on inter-institutional initiatives to assist them.

He also reported that they are in coordination with the Government of Mexico for border security, as well as the care of refugees in Cuilcoto provide them with a safe return to their country of origin.

Since July 23, hundreds of Mexicans have entered Guatemala from the southern state of Chiapas to escape the violence. Of them, 207 have received humanitarian permission to stay, AFP reported.

According to the Insight Crime analysis center, the Sinaloa and Jalisco Nueva Generación cartels are fighting for control of border towns, which are key to drug, arms and migrant trafficking. Mexico to reach the United States, AFP reported.

The 207 Mexicans who received a 30-day humanitarian residence permit in Guatemala remain in Cuilcowhere they receive assistance, the cable added.
